1. What is the difference between the Channing CL30 and CL45 Classic amps?

All Channing amplifiers are made with high quality, top-shelf parts. All our transformers and chokes are made by Mercury Magnetics, widely regarded as the finest transformers built today. The bottom pans of the chassis are made of extra-thick aluminum with welded corners. This provides a rugged, non-magnetic platform for the transformer set and output tube deck. All Channing amplifiers also incorporate our Unified Turret Board™ technology (patent pending).

The 30 and 45 watt Channing CL classics each have different output transformers, power transformers, output tube complements and topologies. The CL30 has a cathode biased output topology with no negative feedback. The CL45 is based on a fixed bias output topology that employs inverse feedback.

These two amps are extensions of great British designs from the early 60’s, owing much of their tone to a great American design from the 1950’s. The Channing CL30 delivers all the chime of the EL84 designs of that era. The Channing CL45 has more clean headroom than the CL30, with a more aggressive onset of distortion. Many players who rely upon single-note lines find that this topology gives clarity to their playing.

2. What kind of cabinets do you use?

All Channing cabinets are made with finger jointed, void-free Baltic Birch cabinets. With one Celestion Alnico Blue and one Celestion G12M Greenback speaker in each cabinet, Channing speaker cabs are the sturdiest, most reliable, sweetest sounding cabinets around. Our cabinet-making techniques are the same as the great amps built 50 years ago, ensuring decades of reliability.

3. What are your head and cabinet dimensions?

Including the handle, our head cabinets are 28.5”w x 8”h x10.5”d. Our speaker cabinets are 28.5”w x 17”h x 10.5”d.

4. Please describe the “stackable” cabinet feature.

The Channing CL Series features stackable head and speaker cabinets that create the look of a combo amplifier. The speaker cabinets have recessed foot cups that match our head and speaker cabinet feet so that they fit together perfectly.

This feature offers three important benefits.

The head and speaker cabinets can be easily separated for use in a recording studio.

Our amplifier always looks uniform. When any Channing head cabinet (CL30 or CL45) is stacked on top of our CL speaker cabinets, it has the classic look of a combo amp. The Channing CL series offers head and speaker cabinets that interlock flawlessly and always look great together.

You can add a second speaker cabinet to the stack without compromising your amp’s uniform appearance. The Channing head cabinet can be stacked on top of two speaker cabinets to achieve a clean 4×12 configuration. The Channing CL amplifiers each feature a speaker load impedance switch to accommodate these speaker configurations.
